It’s very early days, but we’ve built a system that uses balloons, carried by the wind at altitudes twice as high as commercial planes, to beam Internet access to the ground at speeds similar to today’s 3G networks or faster. As a result, we hope balloons could become an option for connecting rural, remote, and underserved areas, and for helping with communications after natural disasters. The idea may sound a bit crazy—and that’s part of the reason we’re calling it Project Loon—but there’s solid science behind it.

Two weeks ago, Jack Dongarra flew to Changsha, China for a meeting with researchers at the National University of Defense Technology, home to the country’s top supercomputing program. He expected an update on their plans for a new mega-machine, but they had a little surprise for him: The system was already up and running.

It’s called Tianhe-2, and with more than 3 million processor cores, it’s the world’s most powerful supercomputer.

No rapper has embodied hip-hop’s often contradictory impulses of narcissism and social good quite as he has, and no producer has celebrated the lush and the ornate quite as he has. He has spent most of his career in additive mode, figuring out how to make music that’s majestic and thought-provoking and grand-scaled. And he’s also widened the genre’s gates, whether for middle-class values or high-fashion and high-art dreams.

Activists say the bill, backed by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s allies in parliament, would prohibit all gay-rights rallies and fear it is fuelling violence against gays. Russian authorities say two recent murders were motivated by homophobia.

You’d think the National Security Agency could afford a decent designer with their vast resources and classified budget, but as you may have already noticed, the recently leaked slideshow on the PRISM program suggests quite the contrary. So freelance designer Emiland De Cubber took it upon himself to help out the clandestine agency with their horrible design choices by redoing the entire presentation, which is available for public viewing on the presentation site SlideShare. After learning it the hard way that they can’t always keep their top secrets remain top-secret, perhaps the NSA won’t skimp on that part of the budget next time around.

Today, on the Tel Aviv Pride Parade, our queer-anarchist activist group, Mashpritzot, protested against pinkwashing and the “gay” community’s priorities. The group painted themselves pink in protest against pinkwashing - the cynical use of the Israeli “gay” community in order to paint Israel as a “liberal”, “progressive” country, and divert attention from the occupation and apartheid against the Palestinians.

They also carried signs protesting the “gay” community’s priorities, reading: “While you fight for gay marriage, LGBTQs are sleeping on the street”, “While you fight for the right to have children, LGBTQ youth are facing parental violence”, “One quarter of bisexuals suffer from poor health”, and more.

In the middle of the Pride Parade, they spread a huge rainbow flag and fell on it, feigning death. The sign seen in the picture reads: “Here lie the victims of the community’s priorities”.

For more about pinkwashing:
BDS, LGBT, and Why You Should Care About Pinkwashing
Pinkwatching Israel //Pinkwashing FAQ
